“You have a sister?”
Lucas looked puzzled and explained, “I guess I forgot to mention—our parents divorced. She grew up with Mom, so not many people really know her.”
“She works here.I’ll call her.”
He quickly dialed my number.
My phone,in the corner,rang.
Including Lucas, all eyes turned to me.
Sophie lunged for it,but he grabbed it first.
Stepping closer,he studied me.
“Hello?”
I rasped with my last bit of strength,“Lucas…”
His face changed.He rushed over,cradling me.
“Sis!”
Sophie paled,frozen.Her friends went silent.
“No way…”
“Lucas,I didn’t know!I swear!”
She clutched his sleeve,sobbing.
He roared angrily,“Get lost!”
“If anything happens to her,you’re done!”
Furious,he kicked her down.
She whimpered,“How was I supposed to know?You can’t blame me!She didn’t say!You can’t leave me…”
Ignoring her,he carried me,yelling for doctors.
I was rushed to surgery.
Lucas waited hours.
When my colleague emerged,he rushed over.“How’s my sister?”
Dr. Chen hesitated for a moment before saying, “The surgery went well, but Dr. Quinn’s arm is severely damaged. Even after it’s repaired, she’ll never be able to hold a scalpel again.”
The news hit like a ton of bricks.Tears streamed as I closed my eyes.
Lucas knew how hard I’d fought to become a surgeon.
Sophie had stolen that with one blow.
How could I not hate her?
Nurses and doctors mourned.
“Dr.Quinn…the only one who could treat that rare disease.”
“She worked harder than anyone else in this hospital.”
“She was always the last to leave.”
Why me? I hadn’t done anything wrong.
Lucas,devastated,knelt by my bed,sobbing.
“Sis,it’s my fault.I should’ve dumped her sooner.”
“I won’t let them get away with this!”
Despite his carefree vibe,he was fiercely protective of me.
He planned to confront Sophie’s family,but they beat him to it,showing up at my room.
Sophie’s mom,groveling,said,“Lucas’s sister,you didn’t tell our Sophie who you were,causing this mix-up.”
“She knows her mistake.For their relationship’s sake,can you forgive her this once?”
