Time seemed to stretch out endlessly and blend together..Sophie tossed the bloody blade, satisfied.
“See?This is what happens to a mistress!”
“Drag her out—let everyone see her face!”

My useless arms hung limply at my sides as blood and sweat stung my eyes.
Numb,like a dead fish,I was hauled outside.
Her friends,seeing me lifeless,whispered,“What if she’s really hurt?I don’t want a murder rap…”
Sophie sneered, “Scared? Mistresses deserve to die! We’re the heroes here!”
Her phone rang—Lucas.
“Sophie, where are you?Let’s meet tonight and talk.”

Her venomous tone instantly melted away, and her voice turned sweet and cooing.“At the hospital.Heading back soon.”
“Why’re you there?”
“Beating a mistress,so no vixen steals you!”
“What mistress?I told you, there’s no one else! What’re you thinking?”

She didn’t buy it,assuming his anger was guilt.
“I handled it for you.”
He hung up.
Sophie’s face soured,then smirked at me.“He won’t blame me.But you?The internet’s seen your shame.You’re ruined!”
When Lucas arrived,he saw me—bloody,battered.
Frowning,he asked,“You did this?This is illegal—she can sue!”
Sophie melted into his arms, soft.“I did it for love! You’re mine—no one else’s!”
“I’m not cheating!” he said, frustration evident in his voice. “Did you hit the wrong person?”
She glanced at me,less sure.“So what if I did? She wouldn’t dare sue the Quinns. We’ll just pay her off.”
“Let’s go eat.Stop being mad!”
Lucas sighed,pulling free.“Get her treated.I’ll cover costs.When she wakes,apologize properly.No more of this.”
Sophie tiptoed, kissing his cheek.“You’re the best!”
He pulled out his phone.“I booked a restaurant.I’ll call my sister too—she’s free tonight and wants to meet you.”
