Chapter 12

Liam's POV

With the gate closed to my face, I could not picture myself leaving even with all the hurt and pain. I know I should get moving; a mate bond can always be rejected, but the mere thought of that does something weird to my brain.

I can only picture myself walking towards the gate and breaking into it to take her away from him, the strange guy I know nothing of but it strikes me at once.

What if he is the one she said she confessed her feelings to and got rejected? You can't control how you feel when they make impulsive actions, can you?

No, is this me trying to defend her? I should picture myself moving but no, I am stuck and invisibly glued to the ground.

When the image of what happened a few whiles ago repeated in my head, I rushed towards the tree behind me and gave it a good blow. It shakes from the impact, but the pain in my knuckles awakens my senses.

I found myself sliding down to sit on one of the extra large tree roots poking out of the ground.

I wondered why I sat down, and suddenly, it hit me, I needed an explanation; I wanted Moon to rush back out here and give me an explanation for what I saw.

My brain is in a mess, and I need something to occupy myself with; a little distraction won't hurt.

'Liam…" I suck in my breath at that voice.

It comes in after I have already sat down and gotten lost in my thoughts for who knows how long.

'Kia. I said not to follow me."

'I didn't. I only looked for you." He said but his face said something else.

'We should get going."

'Just get me a smoke."

'Not here Liam."

I decided to ignore him. With my eyes closed, I waited and waited; I lost count of how long I had had to wait.

It becomes clear that she won't be showing up to clarify anything; it hurts so much I can barely breathe. I have never given my heart out to anyone since the death of my mum; getting to meet my mate filled me up with hopes I could have only dreamt of, but now, this is how I get paid. Is the universe against my happiness?

Does the moon goddess hate me that much to put me through this pain?

I feel something move. 'I will wait for you over there." I hear Kai said.

I know this tactic, he wants me to open my eyes, but I am too pained not to do that. Not knowing which direction he pointed at, I nodded at his words and heard him move noiselessly. It is possible he didn't move at all but what do I care?

'Moon," I called out, expecting a response, but I didn't get any.

This is how it feels like to be betrayed by a mate. I chuckled because there was nothing else to feel except the hurt.

'Kai?" I mumbled.

'Yes?" He responded and as I thought, he didn't move an inch.

'I need a smoke."

'You can't…"

'KAI!"

My eyes snapped open, and I glared hard at him; having no other option, he reached for his pocket and gave me a stick of cigarette alongside a lighter.

After lighting the stick, I take a long drag of the smoke, allowing it to fill my lungs before exhaling; I watch the smoke curl out in rings and shapeless forms.

My eyes water, but I refuse to think of the worst; Moon would not have done that willingly; the look in his eyes told me all I need to know, but who is he? And why would he do something like that?

I keep convincing myself that Moon didn't opt to do that even though she did nothing to protest or fight back, maybe if she had fought back, I would have barged in to aid her.

'Leave me be Kai. It is an order." I said using my aura as his Alpha.

'You can't resist," I state as a matter of fact, and after hesitating for a bit, he moves away.

'Farther than that," I told him, and he obeyed but still didn't move out from my line of sight.

Immediately, I closed my eyes this time to calm myself down. I heard a creak from the gate, and I was on full alert mode, ready to stand up at any time, but I had a second thought.

Why get anxious if I didn't do anything wrong? They should be afraid of me instead but thinking about it again, I shouldn't be in front of their gate since they wouldn't cross my territory too.

'Alpha…" With a raise of my hand, I stop Kai from taking any action.

With my eyes open but lidded as the smoke reddened my already red eyes, I kept taking a drag of the shortening stick while looking out for who would emerge out of the gate. I am desperately hoping it would be Moon; I swear I would whisk her away amid her protest, and then we can talk about what I witness later.

The gate squeaked once at a time as whoever was about to come out of it was extremely careful to avoid attention. I could hear the beat of my heart in my ears, but I sat still.

The gate is finally opened to allow the passage of a person, and she comes out, giving my heart a painful squeeze. I had to hold my chest, hoping the touch of my hand would reduce whatever foreign feeling I had.

I saw her look at me for a bit, and I did too, searching her face to see any reaction. There is none at first but as she approaches me, I see the light dance in her eyes and a little smile play on her lips.

'Hello." She says, thrusting out her hand for a shake.
