Chapter 2

291words
For nearly five years, I've been sharing this shoebox apartment—barely 500 square feet—with my boyfriend, James Carter.

Everyone in the building knows us as the "coupon-clipping couple."

It all started when Mrs. Chambers caught us loading up on instant noodles during a sale.

After that, she spread the word that I was some broke millennial counting pennies like they were diamonds.

...

I cocooned myself in the blanket, sealing out every hint of cold air like it was my sworn enemy.

Soon, a human furnace pressed against my back.

James pulled me against his chest, tucking my frozen hands against his warm back.

"Sophie, you're freezing. We should get a space heater. I don't want you catching something."

"God no. Those things are expensive and they suck electricity like vampires."

I sniffled, my nose probably glowing red in the darkness.

"Besides, we need to save every penny we can."

His eyes narrowed as I mischievously pressed my ice-block hands and feet directly against his warm skin.

They say women are walking contradictions, and well, guilty as charged.

I was still salty about that pathetic excuse for a birthday cake.

I glared at him silently, willing him to read my mind without me having to spell it out.

I watched his handsome face inch closer, his movements under the covers growing increasingly restless.

His eyes darkened with each passing second.

After five years together, I could read him like yesterday's news.

I quickly dove under the covers.

My voice came out muffled through the blanket.

"James Carter, don't even think about it! I'm not in the mood! I—"

Suddenly, I was yanked out from my fabric fortress.

When I opened my eyes, something sparkled on my wrist.

Holy crap, it was gorgeous!
