Chapter 39

Moon woke up in the sick bay, surrounded by the Alpha himself, the Beta, Diana's stoic face, and Lillan's bored face.

'You are up?" Beta Stone asked, his face showing his displeasure as he stood up to walk toward her.

Moon looked at them in a daze; she could not understand why they were gathered around her, and neither could she remember why she was in the sick bay.

'Beta?" She called out softly, a look of confusion on her face.

Diana whispered something to Lilian who nodded and looked back at Moon, a look of displeasure.

'You?" She started, pointing towards Moon.

'I want order and silence." The Alpha ordered and Lilian shut her mouth.

'Why did you steal knowing it is clearly against the rules?" The Alpha started by asking.

Moon looked up at him from her bed with a blank look on her face, she didn't understand what he was on about.

'Steal?" She asked slowly.

Diana looked at the Alpha in disgust. What was wrong with him taking a gentle approach when he didn't do the same years ago?

Beta Stone looked at Diana's foot tapping the floor before looking at her.

'Calm down." He mouthed but she just eyed him and focused her attention on Moon.

'Why did you steal this?" The Alpha brought out the diamond pendant in his enclosed hand and dangled it in front of Moon.

Looking at the dangling pendant, Moon closed her eyes tightly and held her head in her hands, sitting up abruptly before she began swinging front and back.

'Call the nurse." The Alpha ordered and soon Moon was attended to and forced back into sleep.

'When will she be fit?" Alpha Rex asked the middle-aged nurse who bowed before looking back at the now unconscious Moon. 'Due to the weakness of her wolf and her body, she would take a day or two Alpha Rex."

The Alpha looked at the unconscious girl, who bore an uncanny semblance to his lost lover, and sighed, 'Don't let anyone in till we visit again."

'Yes, Alpha." The nurse bowed and left.

'Why?" Diana asked and Beta Stone shot her a look.

'I mean, she doesn't deserve all this act of kindness after she stole something so precious to me." Diana was almost sneering looking at the Alpha, whose face was heavy with changing unidentified emotions.

'Why did you assume she did it?" The Alpha asked, looking at Lilian, who shifted back and behind Diana, subtly pinching her.

'They are just immature and angry, Alpha; I suggest we leave. You have other important things to do." The Beta butted in, giving Diana a warning gaze.

'Take." The Alpha stretched the pendant towards Diana, who rushed in and took it in a breath, barely thanking the Alpha.

Looking at Diana, who only glared at Moon, he stretched his hand again, and this time, it was towards the door. Lilian, seeing the silent command, tugged at Diana's clothes.

'What?" She retorted and Moon gave a little jerky movement.

'The Alpha," Lilian said to her, her hands over her mouth.

Looking at the Alpha whose gaze was solidly on her, Diana gave a half now with a forced 'long live the Alpha." Before finding her way out of the room, she paused to look back at Moon but only met the eyes of the Alpha on her.

Slightly bending her head again, she left almost closing the door against Lilian's face just closely behind her.

'Leave." The Alpha ordered.

'They are out already." Beta Stone responded, looking at the Alpha, who now had his back turned to the door.

'I meant you. Leave."

Beta Stone stilled, looking at the unfamiliar stance of the proud and strong Alpha. His shoulders were slumped, and his head was a little bowed; he was oozing the aura of a defeated hero. For a minute or two he feared the Alpha suddenly uncovering the secret from the past.

'But I have done nothing wrong Alpha Rex." Beta Stone countered, his hands behind his back and his eyes closely following the movement of the Alpha.

He heard the Alpha sigh before turning slowly to look at him.

'Can't I have my space because I lead a pack?" His eyes were tired.

'That wasn't what I meant, Alpha," Stone replied, his eyes traveling from the Alpha to Moon.

'What were you trying to imply then?"

'She is an ordinary pack member who might be a thief. I wondered why you want to be left alone with her."

'Is this an accusation?"

'How can I?" The Beta bowed, his heart beating a little faster than usual.

'I will be out in a bit." The Alpha said in a tone of finality before turning back to stare at the unconscious Moon.

Looking at him with his brows furrowed, Beta Stone stepped out to see the shadows of the two girls still hovering behind the wall and their incoherent whispers.

Walking towards Moon whose face was tight in a frown and suddenly full of sweat. His feet came to a halt and he bent to stroke her hair.

'Olivia was just like you." He said sadly reminiscing his lost mate of 23 years ago.

'She was pregnant when she suddenly went missing." He sat down on the little space on the bed, his eyes still focused on Moon.

'I believe you didn't do it, Moon." Alpha Rex sighed a look flashed in his eyes and he closed them in pain and regret.

He looked back at the pale Moon, a look of longing flashed his eyes, a desperate wish that she was his daughter but the news from the past made him close his eyes in pain.

'A report says her body was found and she had been buried already." Echoed in the Alpha's head.

'Yes Alpha, even with the pregnancy."

Alpha Rex stood up in a flash and walked towards the door, pausing to look back at Moon.

No, he couldn't allow his grief for his missing mate to blind his sense of judgment. He opened the door and, without looking back, he closed it, turned the key to lock, removed it, and left.

The pained look on Moon's face kept playing in his head as he walked down the hallway to his quarters.

'Olivia." Alpha Rex whispered to the wind the moment he stepped outside, a lone tear dropping from his left eye.
