My Brother’s Girlfriend Thought I Was His Mistress and Ruined My Career. Now She Needs Me to Save Her Life When my brother was hospitalized due to mushroom poisoning,I brought him home. That night,he posted an Instagram photo of me cooking in the kitchen with the caption,“Feeling so happy right now.”
The next day, while I was on duty at the hospital, a woman who claimed to be his girlfriend burst into my office, accusing me of being the woman who was trying to break up their relationship. She broke my hand, effectively ending my surgical career. Later on,she contracted a rare disease. The only person who could save her was me. When Lucas ate the toxic mushrooms,I’d just finished my shift. In the emergency room,he was delirious, grabbing at the air and gnawing on his arm as if it was a drumstick.
I took him to my apartment. That evening,he woke up,saw me cooking in an apron, and took a photo for Instagram with the caption,“Feeling so happy right now.” I teased him,“Already happy? Just wait till you get married.” His smile faded.
I asked if he had had a fight with his girlfriend. He shoveled food into his mouth, grumbling,“Don’t ask.She went crazy yesterday, saying I was cheating and that she’d make the other woman pay.” Though he’s my brother,I’m a woman first. “Relationships thrive on trust,”I said.“Meet her soon, talk it out.Don’t leave her feeling insecure.” Our parents divorced when we were young.Lucas grew up abroad with Dad and only returning recently. Mom didn’t teach him much,so I,his big sister, stepped in to help. If I wasn’t swamped at Silverton General tomorrow,I’d have met his girlfriend myself. “Oh,give her that limited-edition Chanel bag I got you,”I added.“Tell her it’s my welcome gift and apologize for me.I’m too busy to meet her now,but we’ll hang out soon.” Lucas grinned.“I’ll thank you for Sophie!” “Dad’s calling—I have to go.Don’t tell Mom I was here!” He wolfed down dinner and bolted out,his impulsive nature just like Dad’s. With the number of patients spiking,I headed to the hospital. By noon, colleagues were at lunch, but I stayed, reviewing research. Alone in my office, engrossed in my work,I didn’t notice the door until it slammed open. Sophie Larson,Lucas’s girlfriend, stormed in with a group of friends. I frowned—barging in without knocking irked me. But,recognizing her,I softened and forced a smile.“Hi—” Before I could finish, she hurled my coffee mug at my head. My mind went blank.A searing pain shot through me. When I touched my scalp,my hand came away bloody. Sophie and her friends circled me. She grabbed my hair, snarling,“Caught you,you filthy woman who’s trying to break up our relationship!!” Previous Chapter
