Chapter 14

"James... what are you talking about? I mean, thanks for defending me back there,"

"But you didn't have to go that far with the act."

"Won't all this lawyer stuff cost a fortune?"

I still couldn't wrap my head around the idea that my boyfriend was loaded.

Then he handed me his driver's license.

There it was, plain as day—

Owner: James Carter.

Reality finally crashed down on me like a ton of bricks.

Everything he'd said was true.

But why had he lied to me?

Suddenly, I remembered his strange question that morning—

"Sophie, if someone lied to you—for a good reason—could you forgive them?"

I honestly didn't know.

"Why did you lie to me all this time?" My voice barely above a whisper.

"I'm sorry, Sophie. I was wrong to deceive you."

"I'm sorry, but I know how much you despise wealthy people."

"I'm sorry, but I couldn't bear to lose you."

"And I still have no intention of letting you go."
