Chapter 9

I'd assumed Felix was taking me to a normal restaurant.

Instead, we pulled up to a place with actual Michelin stars.

Staring at the menu with its astronomical prices,

I nearly choked.

I couldn't tell if we were ordering dinner or financing a small car.

I glanced from the menu to Felix's face. He looked completely unfazed.

Of course—he was the one who'd dragged me here, after all.

With that perspective, I felt much better about the situation.

So I started ordering with reckless abandon.

And I didn't pick things I actually wanted.

I deliberately chose the most expensive items on the menu!

His wallet was taking this hit, not mine.

"That's a lot of food. Sure you can handle all that?"

Felix eyed the growing list, one eyebrow arched.

"What's the problem? This is probably just pocket change for someone like you, right?"

"Besides, I'm just a poor working girl. How often do I get to eat somewhere this fancy? Might as well make the most of it."

I watched his expression darken as the bill climbed into five figures.

I felt a surge of petty satisfaction.

Halfway through dinner, I excused myself to find the ladies' room.

Turns out finding a bathroom in a fancy restaurant is like navigating a labyrinth.

I tried to recall the waiter's complicated directions.

I wandered the halls, looking for any sign of a restroom.

Instead, I saw someone I never expected—

James Carter.
